Vegan pizza is not a bid deal, to be honest. Pizza is a simple product, very easy to make. It is over 1000 years old and was invented in Italy. The original pizza was very basic and simple: the flat dough with tomatoes and mozzarella. Nowadays pizza doesn’t look anything like it used to before. It has so many topics, it is super fat and unhealthy. It used to be a basic food, fresh and natural and now, it simply makes people overweight and creates dependency.
I’m still a huge fan of pizza, even after turning vegan. I was looking for various combinations of ingredients to be able to enjoy vegan pizza and eat healthier.
Making vegan dough is easy. For one big pizza you’ll need about 1tbsp of active yeast and about one cup of warm water. Mix it and leave it for about 10 minutes. Add salt, 2 tbsps of vegetable oil and 1,5-2 cups of flour. Don’t add all the flour at the beginning. Add a little flour as you mix to see how much exactly you will need. If the dough is sticky, add a little bit of flour and knead the dough for at least 10 minutes. The more you can do it – the better. My hands get very tired after 10 minutes only. Leave it for 1 hour in a warm place to raise.
When the dough is ready, you can prepare the sous. I prefer a tomato paste or sous from the store. It just needs some finishing touches. If the paste is too thick, add some water. I prefer to add some garlic, fresh or dried basil leaves , oregano, a sprinkle of olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper.
For pizza toppings, I prefer: mushrooms, peppers, onions, egg plant, artichokes and corn. You don’t have to add them all. Make sure you slice them thinly, or even fry/grill the veggies before putting them on your pizza.
For the cheese, there are two options: vegan cheese or no cheese at all. I don’t mind any of them. I can have pizza with no cheese, that’s what I’m asking at the restaurant. You may also add other vegan products like vegan ‘sausages’, meat free stuff available in the store. I personally, don’t feel very well eating those. I would rather add some broccoli instead.
You can also make your own vegan cheese! But I’ll save the recipe for another post. I’ve tried many recipes to get a melting cheesy texture.
The most important thing about making pizza is baking it on a very high temperature. Also get a pizza stone if you can. I saw some people simply use a kitchen tile for that purpose too. This will help you achieve that crunchy dough margins, yet keep it thin on the inside.
All the pictures above are mine. I like to sprinkle some Tobasco sous on my pizza and enjoy it on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee with soy milk.
